The «Olive-rack» case

My name is inspector Lorenzo Rodrigues and I am an investigator. The last case I took part in, was in fact the murder of a famous estate agent named Stéphane Plaza. His body was found in his holiday home in Worrington, England.

After multiple searches my colleagues and I have decided to summon two suspects. That same morning, I came to my desk at the local police. I asked my colleague, Officer Cumberbatch, to bring in the two suspects. The first one to enter the room was Margarita Consuela Desuza, she was the cleaner. The second person to come in was Bob Chakal, an old entrepreneur from London. They both sat down in front of my desk to start the examination talk.

“Hello to you both, I am inspector Lorenzo Rodrigues, you are here, as you are two possible suspects of Mr Plaza’s murder. I would like to review and resume the situation so far… Stéphane Plaza, that you both knew, was found dead by you Mrs Desuza, 3 days after his death.

It would seem that he was killed from a punch of a rack in his chest.

Mrs Desuza, why were you absent on the day of the murder?”

“I was on vacation in Ibiza with my cousin Roberto; Mr Plaza gave me a 3 day break.”

“And you hadn’t seen anything suspicious concerning Mr Plaza’s behaviour, by any chance, over the past few days?”

“No, as a matter of fact, he seemed very relax after he retired.”

“Very well, and were you close to Mr Plaza, in any shape of form?”

“No, our relationship didn’t go further than me just being his cleaner, but he was very kind and generous with me.”

“I see…”

“Can I just ask why I’m here? I haven't seen Mr Plaza in a year!”

“Well, I bet you didn’t know that you were his last client, Mr Chakal before he retired…”

“No, I didn’t know that, actually.”

“It seems as though, after buying the house he helped you find, you lost everything! So you could have a reason to want to get back at him. Where were you the night of the murder?”

“I was at a friend’s house watching “Les Touches”.”

“Have you ever taken any illegal substances?”

“Who do you think I am? Some sort of drug dealer! I didn’t kill the guy, and besides I am allergic to wood that comes from olive trees!”

“Hang on a minute, never did I mention at any time, something about olive trees!”

A few days later, once the analyses finished, it was found that the DNA found on the rack matched Bob Chakal and so he was found guilty of the murder which had removed from the whole world an icon of the estate agent community.
